Science House Donates 200 Seedlings For Earth Day

Green thumb and expert arborist Bridgette Suzanne Smith together with her team of enthusiastic junior volunteers at the Greenburgh Nature Center in Scarsdale, New York, planted a total of 200 seedlings at their Earth Day celebration on April 19. The event was attended by special guest Senator Cousins, who's personal assistance is an annual tradition. Earth Day is held across the globe on April 22 and is designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment.

The Acer rubrum (Red Maple) tree seedlings donated by Science House will form a nursery at the nature center which will be used to grow and stock native trees for replacement of deceased and expiring trees, as well as establishment of new groves and to fill-in bare areas along the nature center trails. Acer rubrum is a native species that carries an extremely high value within forest ecosystems. This deciduous tree is noted for early bloom of red flowers from March to April, its ability to flourish in sun and shade and phenomenal fall color display. At full maturity, 70-85 years depending environmental conditions, Acer rubrum will range between 40-60 feet in height. The average life expectancy of this tree is 130 years.
